Hamnet: When a Screenplay Reads Like Literature

I’m currently editing the Turkish translation of the Hamnet screenplay for next month’s Script Club session. Working this closely with the script makes me appreciate sentences like this even more: “He has some experience taming a wild beast — the one within himself.” It’s an action line from the scene where Agnes and Will first meet.

The screenplay has a remarkably literary voice. It spends so much time exploring the characters’ inner worlds, with beautifully written passages that would make you wonder how they would translate to the screen if you had the chance to read the script before seeing the film.

Luckily, next month we’ll be doing exactly that: comparing the screenplay with the finished film, while also diving into its writing process and structure. I’m already quite excited about it.
